Slip space is available at the Crane River Marina for 14-17’ boats. Rates are as low as $42.00/ft. For more information call (978) 762-0210.

The Danvers Waterfront is alive with seasonal excitement! Nearly 1,100 boaters have claimed Danvers their homeport. Made up of four rivers; the Danvers River, the Waters River, the Crane River and the Porter River; Danvers provides boaters with a sheltered harbor with less than a 30 minute ride to the ocean.

Danvers is home to the Danversport Yacht Club and four private marinas
(Bunky's Marina, Liberty Marina, Pope's Landing Marina and Riverview Marina). The Town of Danvers owns and operates the Crane River Marina located on McDewell Ave. which provides dockage for 58 vessels up to 25' in length. Fuel is available at the Danversport Yacht Club as well as pumpout service station.

Pope's Landing is a short hop from Route 128, exit 23S and for a minimum charge of $5.00 ($75 for the season) one can launch their boat. The landing offers public restrooms, a lighted parking lot, a scenic park, and a picnic area.

The Harbormaster's office oversees the placement and permitting of 125 moorings. Moorings are privately owned by boaters and homeowners. The Town of Danvers is not currently permitting any new moorings, however, moorings being sold are offered to waiting list applicants.

Harbormaster’s Boating Safety Tip of the Week

Check the weather forecast. A calm day can quickly turn ugly on the water. Stay on top of the forecast while boating and heed all weather and storm advisories. Check the condition of your life raft annually and before long distance off-shore cruising. Carry flares at all times.

What is a Harbormaster?

Harbormasters have been on watch since colonial times to ensure that shipping went smoothly and trade was regulated. Two centuries later, Section 23 of Massachusetts's code on Harbors and Harbormasters still contains the wording that permits harbormasters to direct vessels to "cockbill the lower yards ... and rig in the jib boom."

Nearly all harbormasters in the U.S. are municipal employees, either appointed by their village, town or state, and their geographic area of responsibility can cover just one marina, or an entire harbor and acres of mooring fields, transient docks and year-round marinas. Many harbormasters have a staff of dock, fuel and maintenance workers as well as harbor patrol or natural resources staff under their control.

There are a few privately funded harbormasters, but their responsibilities usually only lie with one marina and its boaters, much like a marina manager or dockmaster. They are more solely focused on customer service, rather than having a larger role in the community.

The days of the harbormaster sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch with a corn cob pipe are gone. There is much more boating traffic, and in a post-9-11 world where harbor security is a priority. Harbor can be "target-rich"--full of bridges, power plants, passenger ships and offloading tankers.

In addition to homeland security, environmental laws are also a big issue now. While enforcing the rules of the road concerning boats operating within their jurisdiction, a big part of the job is to educate boaters on the state's environmental regulations and responsibilities can be extensive.
